The call to end violence against women and girls has been a conversation globally for several years now. The 16 Days of Activism serves as a yearly international reminder for us all to challenge Gender-Based Violence anywhere we notice it and take active steps to speak out for victim or as victims. Globally it kicked off on the 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, the Human Rights Day.
Efforts from the United Nations Office of the Secretary-General launched a campaign since 2008, UNITE by 2030 to End Violence against Women which runs alongside the #16DaysofActivism, an initiative inauguration by the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. The theme for 2023, “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”. Here in Nigeria, Peace Direct and LEGASI have infused a collaborative campaign to reintroduce the 112 Nigerian Emergency Toll Free line to ensure victims of different forms of crisis inclusive of gender-based violence as well as community members who know victims can report any case of domestic violence to such state emergency operators anonymously. This campaign is continuous as we are intentional to revitalize the usage of this emergency line within Nigeria which serves as an Early Warning/Early Response mechanism to support community resilience.
